Electrical Installation for a 4,500-Square-Foot Custom Home in Harrisonville, Missouri

We recently completed the electrical installation and final trim-out on this approximately 4,500-square-foot custom home in Harrisonville, Missouri. In addition to the finished living space, the home includes a roughly 1,000-square-foot attached three-car garage, a large unfinished section of basement, and generous outdoor living areas with a walkout deck and covered patio below.

The finished home has a warm, distinctive style, with natural wood tones, brick and stone, dark exterior finishes, and a variety of carefully selected light fixtures throughout. One of the things we enjoy about custom home electrical work is seeing how the electrical system and lighting become part of the overall design rather than simply being added to it. From the kitchen pendants and recessed lighting to the decorative fixtures throughout the living spaces, each part of the installation needed to complement the architecture while remaining practical for everyday use.

Planning for Future Electrical Needs

A good electrical installation should serve the homeowner today while also considering what they may need years from now.

For this project, the homeowner wanted the ability to add a portable generator in the future. We intentionally reserved the two upper-right breaker spots in the electrical panel so a generator connection and approved interlock system can be added later without unnecessarily rearranging the panel.

We also installed a two-inch conduit from the basement near the electrical panel into the attic before drywall was installed. This creates an accessible pathway through the finished portions of the home for future wiring. Whether the homeowner eventually wants additional electrical circuits, low-voltage wiring, networking, or another upgrade, having that pathway in place can make future work considerably easier and less invasive.

These details aren't necessarily the most noticeable parts of a finished home, but they're an important part of thoughtful custom home electrical work.

Adding Six PoE Security Cameras After Completion

One of the more challenging parts of this project came after the original rough-in and trim-out were already complete.

The homeowner decided to add six exterior PoE security cameras connected with Cat6 cable to a centrally located NVR. By that point, the walls and ceilings were finished and the attic had already been insulated.

Rather than relying on exposed wiring or unnecessary openings in finished surfaces, we worked through the insulated attic to reach each camera location. The Cat6 cables were fished from the exterior camera locations into the attic, routed neatly back toward the center of the home, and then dropped through the wall to an access point beside the NVR.

It required considerably more work than installing the system during the original rough-in—but it gave the homeowner the system they wanted while keeping the finished installation clean.

Electrical Work That Complements the Home

The final result is a home with a lot of character. The wood ceilings and beams, stone fireplace, herringbone tile, cabinetry, dark accents, and decorative fixtures all work together to create a warm and functional space.
